Dress Codes

On Course Dress Codes

Members, their guests and visitors are requested to maintain a reasonable standard of dress whilst on the course.
Contemporary fashions often mean that the nature of golf clothing changes over time, and at Birchwood we hope to reflect popular trends in golf attire, provided they remain within the traditional framework of acceptable dress.
For men, collared traditional golfing polo shirts, or modern turtle-necked golfing shirts are acceptable.
Trousers or tailored shorts are permitted, but with shorts ankle length socks may be worn provided that they are predominantly white in colour. Shirts should always be tucked into trousers.
For ladies, the range of acceptable clothing is greater and shirts will usually be collared or turtle-necked but may be sleeveless. Trousers, shorts, skirts, and culottes are all acceptable. Shirts will normally be tucked in, unless they are designed to be worn otherwise.
In inclement weather, polo-necked shirts and sweaters are acceptable and, recognised golfing outerwear only must be worn. For both men and ladies, recognised golfing footwear must be worn.
Denim jeans, track-suits, football or beach-style shorts and collarless tee-shirts are strictly prohibited.
The professional and his assistant and Council members have been asked to ensure that all players adhere to these rules and anyone who does not, will be asked tactfully to comply. Anyone who is unwilling, or unable to comply may be asked to leave the course and, in the case of members or their guests, matters will be reported to Council.
If in doubt as to the suitability of clothing, please consult the pro-shop where assistance will be given to anyone without the appropriate attire.

Clubhouse Dress Code

Members, their guests and visitors are requested to maintain a reasonable standard of dress whilst using the Club’s facilities.
Generally, this means that “smart-casual” will be expected at all times. Contemporary fashions often mean that the nature of “smart-casual” clothing changes over time and at Birchwood we do not wish to prevent wearing clothes that are casual and fashionable provided they remain within the traditional framework of acceptable dress.
For men, collared shirts and traditional golfing polo shirts or modern turtle- necked golfing shirts are acceptable in the clubhouse as well as on the course. Long trousers and shorts will be permitted provided that shorts are tailored. Golf shoes and workmen’s shoes are not permitted at all in the clubhouse.
For ladies the range of acceptable clothing for the course and clubhouse is greater and shirts will usually be collared or turtle-necked but may be sleeveless. Trousers, shorts, skirts, and skorts are all acceptable.
Whilst we expect the “smart-casual” principle to apply, denim jeans and more casual trousers and tailored shorts for men and women will be permitted, as will collarless shirts, however jeans that have holes in or are ripped, weather manufactured that way or not, will not be acceptable
Track-suits, football or beach-style shorts, or shirts and vests are strictly prohibited at all times. Council members have been asked to ensure that all people using the Club facilities (apart from the Mayflower suite and X1X) adhere to these rules, and anyone who does not, will be asked tactfully to comply. Anyone who is unwilling, or unable to comply may be asked to leave the Clubhouse and, in the case of members or their guests, matters will be reported to Council.
If in doubt as to the suitability of clothing, please consult a Council member.
